Be aware that immigrants frequently could not read/write and therefore could not provide accurate spelling of the Kump surname, especially before the year 1800. In fact, it is common for the letter "K" to be documented as a "C" or even a "G" due to German phonetics. Therefore, it is quite possible our ancestors names were recorded as such variations as Cump, Gump, or even Cumpf or Gumpf. Some indexes even list the surname as Rump or Rumpf (due to transcription error where the "K" is mistakenly written as an "R").
